These two basic physical needs are often discussed together. All of us need to feel free from threats to both health and safety. Speeches describing the endangered ozone layer and the warning signs of deadly diseases obviously involve both. Our student speakers warned of the dangers of smoking and of the need for clean air and water, and expounded on the advantages of exercise and herbal medicines. They described rising crime rates, discussed the potential dangers of earthquakes, and urged classmates to be organ donors. Appeals to our safety needs often arouse fear in the audience. Fear appeals in a speech, if they are too obvious or frightening, can give listeners the impression that you are manipulating them. Therefore, use this technique with caution, If you develop fear appeals, be sure to show listeners how they can protect themselves from the dangers you describe
